Annual Wai Khru - Shivagakomarpaj Lineage
Wai khru (pronounced like the English words "why crew") is the most important
traditional practice of the Thai healer. Wai khru is a formal ceremony in which a
practitioner of Thai massage or other Thai healing arts honors his or her teachers
and lineage. Practitioners show their gratitude to the lineage of teachers who
handed ancient medical knowledge down to the present day, and receive
blessings of the masters.
The ceremony is usually performed individually by practitioners in their homes
or places of business every day. However, it is also important for practitioners to
gather together once a year to honor the founders of their lineage as a whole.
The Shivagakomarpaj Lineage wai khru this year will be hosted by our founder's
son, "Master" Ajahn Wasan Chaichakan, kicking off a year-long celebration of the
50-year legacy of his father's teachings.
The vast majority of all Thai massage practitioners and teachers in the Western
world have learned from teachings traced back to the Shivagakomarpaj Lineage
and the founder "Master" Ajahn Sintorn Chaichakan. While many Western
students and practitioners in this lineage have learned an abbreviated wai khru
ceremony and practice it on a regular basis, they are most often not able to attend
the major annual ceremony in Chiang Mai. As part of our role as the
Shivagakomarpaj Lineage seat in the West, the Thai Institute assumes the
responsibility of an annual major ceremony of wai khru here in the U.S.
We invite all practitioners of Thai massage that are in any way connected with the
Shivagakomarpaj Lineage to join us in this annual celebration. Whether you
studied with any teacher from the Old Medicine Hospital, Thai Institute of
Healing Arts, ITM, Sunshine Network, Lotus Palm, ITTA, TaoMountain, or any
other teacher, you are invited to participate in the ceremony in order to honor
our shared lineage, receive the blessings of our masters, and ensure the
effectiveness of your therapies. If you are teaching a form of Thai massage that
derives from the Old Medicine Hospital curriculum, it is particularly important
that you attend this ceremony annually in order to be considered a legitimate
instructor in the Shivagakomarpaj Lineage.

Presentation:
Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of "Northern Style" Thai massage
The Shivagakomarpaj Lineage style of Thai massage (commonly called the
"Northern Style") was developed by Ajahn Sintorn Chaichakan, a traditional Thai
doctor from Chiang Mai. For 50 years, this style of massage has been taught at his
institution, the Old Medicine Hospital, and it has grown to be the most influential
form of Thai massage outside of Thailand. Dr Salguero will give an introduction
to the lineage, and show how Ajahn Sintorn's teachings have influenced every
major Thai massage school in North America today.
Dr Pierce Salguero was recognized as a teacher in the Shivagakomarpaj Lineage
by Ajahn Sintorn in 1997. Through his former school TaoMountain, and now at
Thai Institute, he has been a major proponent of the Thai healing arts in the USA
for the past 14 years. He has written multiple books on Thai massage and
medicine that have been translated into Chinese, Czech, Estonian, Portuguese,
and Spanish, and continues to teach courses on all aspects of traditional Thai
medicine.

Discussion Panel:
Thai Massage in the Modern World: Drawing on Ancient Healing
Practices to Treat the Modern Patient
A panel of leaders in Thai massage education in the West will facilitate a
discussion on the modernization of traditional Thai massage — including our
commitment to tradition and authenticity, issues of certification and licensure,
professional associations, and credentials. This is a dynamic discussion panel
guided by interaction with participants.

Sangkatan:
Negotiating the Thai Culture as a Western Practitioner
David Roylance, a practicing Theravada Buddhist, will introduce the meaning
and proper protocol of a Sangkatan Ceremony. This important ceremony will
provide Thai healers good blessings for health and prosperity. He will also share
what to expect when visiting a Thai Buddhist Temple and the proper way to offer
respects. David will focus on how these practices relate to your healing arts
practice, and how they may assist the interested traveler of Thailand to navigate
the country.
Following the presentation, participants will be invited to join David for a
Sangkatan ceremony during our field trip to Wat Thai DC in Silver Springs, MD.
Phra Ajahn Thanat Inthisan, Ph.D, a Theravada Buddhist Monk, will lead us in a
tour of the Temple and a Sangkatan ceremony.
David Roylance, Executive Director of Thai Institute of Healing Arts and Touch
of Asia Therapy Center, has lived and worked with Thais since 2001. He has
personally visited over 150 Thai temples in both the USA and Thailand. He
currently lives in Thailand 3 months per year. David will share his insights and
cultural experiences from continuous interaction with the vibrant culture of
Thailand.

Field Trip:
Wat Thai DC Buddhist Temple in Silver Springs, MD
Thai Buddhist Temples, or "Wat" are located all throughout the beautiful country
of Thailand. They dot the cityscape and serve as the focal point for every village.
In addition to a spiritual foundation, temple facilities serve as community
centers, educational venues, and sometimes offer medical care.
This field trip will guide you through the experience of visiting an active Thai
Temple here in the US for a peek at monastic life and community activities.
Visiting a Thai temple is a way to become part of the local Thai community and to
experience its rich culture and traditions in action. If you've never visited a Thai
Temple — or if you have, but didn't know what to do — this will be the perfect
introduction and experience you'll always remember. See their website for more
details: http://watthaidc.org
(Transportation will be coordinated on the day of the event by individual
participants and by metro.)

Explorations & Expeditions: A Journey through the Thai Healing Arts
Urban Medicinal Herb Walks
Ajahn Supamas Kananurak (Thai medicine Doctor) and Dr. Pierce Salguero
(author of the only guide to Thai herbs published in the West) will lead
participants in an "herb tasting walk" through our urban neighborhood, teaching
us how to apply Thai herbal theories using Western herbs. Participants will learn
how local plant species found growing within our reach could be used for
medicinal purposes. The destination of our walk will be our private Thai and
Western herb garden, where we will discuss cultivation techniques along with
growing and harvesting strategies.

Thai Palm Reading with Ketsarin Phaopanfeung
"Ket" is one of the Thai Institute's best-kept secrets. Since 2003, she has studied
with several Mo Doo (Doctors of Fortune-Telling) in Thailand. She has used her
palm-reading skill in Thailand to raise money for charity, and is always sought
after at our staff parties. However, she has never before agreed to offer her
services to the general public here in the US. For the first time, Ket will be
available for palm reading, and will be giving individualized 5 min. consultations.
This is an opportunity not to be missed.

Luesii Dat Ton ("Thai Self-Stretching" or Thai Yoga)
Luesii Tevijjo Yogi, practitioner and lifelong student of Traditional Thai Medicine
and an ordained Luesii of two Thai lineages, will lead sessions of the Thai self stretching
exercise known as "Luesii Dat Ton." This indigenous Thai form of
yoga was created by the Luesii, practitioners of various esoteric sciences such as
astrology, herbalism, bone setting, palmistry, and alchemy. Handed down orally
for centuries among the Luesii, Luesii Dat Ton also became a major influence
on Thai kickboxing ("Muay Thai"), Thai dancing ("Ram Thai"), and Thai Massage
("Nuat Thai"), and is today re-emerging as an important Thai healing modality in
its own right. Often taught at Thai schools alongside of the massage techniques
themselves, learning Luesii Dat Ton with Luesii Tevijjo Yogi will greatly enhance
participants' understand of Thai massage.

Thai Magic Medicine for Healing and Protection
In this session, David Roylance will introduce multiple types of healing magic
that are used in Thailand specifically for the cure of patients and the protection of
practitioners. Any Thai business owner — but especially those whose
establishments involve healing — will be sure to engage in Thai magical traditions
in order to increase their healing powers, attract success, and protect their clients
from negative energies and spirits. David will take participants on a tour of the
Thai Institute, stopping to introduce the center's spirit house, yan (magic
diagrams), spirits of prosperity, folk artwork, central altar, and his collection of
rare and valuable Thai amulets, and will discuss the significance and use of each.

Traditional Thai Massage & Medicine for Women
Thai Medicine Midwife and Doctor of Massage ("mo nuat phaen boran") Sararut
Pilakun Roylance will introduce participants to a facet of traditional Thai
techniques for female health that is exclusively open to women. Her workshop is
available to female participants only, and no further details will be listed here.

Presentation:
What Are the Thai Sen After All? : A Comparison of the Thai Sen,
Chinese Meridians, Yoga Nadis, and Anatomy Trains
Dr. Pierce Salguero will present an extensive comparison between the Thai sen,
Chinese meridians, yoga nadis, and the modern "anatomy trains" theory of
Structural Integration. Dr. Salguero will discuss the common ground and
historical relationship between these systems, the role of Buddhism in their
spread across Asia, and how a deeper understanding of the sen can revolutionize
your practice of Thai massage.
Dr. Pierce Salguero is a historian of traditional Asian medicine with a Ph.D. from
Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. A specialist in Buddhist healing practices, he
also is an expert on the history of Indian, Chinese, and Thai medical systems. Dr.
Salguero is a university professor of Asian history and history of medicine, and
regularly lectures on the cross-cultural connections between Asian traditions at
academic conferences in the US and abroad.

Luncheon Panel:
Thai Massage Teaching Round Table Collaborative Discussion
Join this round table luncheon for a dialogue among those currently teaching the
Thai healing arts and those interested in teaching. This discussion will focus on:
ways to communicate traditional concepts to a modern audience, what students
desire in their education, how to balance Western expectations while providing
an "authentic" learning environment, student-teacher relationships, etc.
Participants will discus, share, and ask questions related to their own experiences
in the classroom as a student and/or teacher. Share and gain insight that will
propel Thai massage education forward into the next decade.

Discussion Panel:
Traditional Thai Massage, Thai Medicine, and Thai Herbalism –
Personal Discovery Discussion
Advanced resources to deepen your understanding of Traditional Thai Massage,
Thai Medicine, and Thai Herbalism are scarce within the English language. Thai
medicine itself is bound by a strict ethical code that limits translation of serious
medical texts. This can often leave Western students and practitioners lacking the
personal detailed information they need to further their practice.
Question and answer session with two native Thais specializing in Traditional
Thai Medicine at the Doctoral level. "Master" Ajahn Supamas Kananurak (Thai
Medicine Doctor) and Mo Sararut Pilakun Roylance (Thai medicine midwife and
Thai massage doctor) will field questions and hold discussion on topics related to
treating patients with Traditional Thai Medicine and Thai massage. Discuss, question,
and learn this unique form of medicine hands-on with native Thai doctors.

Discussion Panel:
Business Development and Practice Building: Best Practices for
Building a Compassionate Massage, Yoga, and/or Healing Arts
Business
Building a compassionate and successful healing arts practice is a dream we
aspire to achieve. However, books on business and how to build a successful
company often times don't target our industry or share our unique values.
This panel will focus on the joys and pitfalls of owning/operating a therapy
practice or educational center. Discuss your ideas, challenges, and questions
among others who share your concerns within your industry, and gain insights to
help you build a "thriving" healing arts practice. This panel will encompass both
practical suggestions on building a successful business from David Roylance and
an open interactive discussion among participants.
David Roylance, Executive Director of the Thai Institute of Healing Arts and
Touch of Asia Therapy Center, has over 14 years of experience in the business
world. In 2003, he left a successful career managing multi-million dollar
corporations to start a healing arts practice in the living room of his apartment.
His institution is now the largest Thai massage operation in the US, employing
over 20 individuals, having provided over 30,000 therapy sessions, and having
taught thousands of students the healing arts of Thailand. David believes that
financial success and a compassion-centered approach go hand in hand, as
growing business prosperity allows an increasing ability to touch individual
people's lives.
